Date: 10 August 2017
Release: Immediate

Nine development paddlers from the Soweto Canoe and Recreation Club (SCARC) will be heading to Camps Drift in Pietermaritzburg to take part in the SA Canoe Marathon Championship from 12 to 13 August 2017.

Of the team, three of the paddlers are girls, who show great promise in the Junior and under-23’s category.

In order to qualify for this prestigious race, SCARC paddlers had to complete the Provincial Champs, where the top 2 for every age category are selected.
They will now take on the best paddlers in the country from all nine provinces.

With just two spots up on the national team in each age division in both the K1 and K2 races, and this year’s world championship on home soil, the cream of the paddling crop will be in an all-out fight at Camps Drift on Saturday and Sunday

Marathon racing is the most popular discipline in South African canoeing, and a vibrant calendar of events takes advantage of the many excellent paddling rivers and flat-water courses across the country.

After the great success of canoeing-based film “Beyond the River” this year, all eyes will be on the competitors to spot the next Siseko Ntondini, the SCARC paddling star the film was based on.

SCARC is the brainchild of ADreach CEO, Brad Fisher, and aims to provide the youth of the historic township an opportunity to uplift themselves through the power of sport.

“The SCARC paddlers are now in high demand to partner with seasoned paddlers who are really the best of the best,” explains Fisher,  “This is based purely on their hard work and ability. Canoeing’s development initiatives are fast becoming the future of paddling in our country through the members sheer determination to change their circumstances.”
